The very rapid rise in fuel prices in the mid and late 1970's focussed gas turbine engine design, and development effort, upon the dramatic need for increased fuel economy. The consequence of this upon engine system oeprating temperatures has had a significant impact upon the fuel and lubricant technology areas.
Some of the programmes involved are summarised by the papers in this publication. They provide a state-of-the-art and strategy appreciation under three distinct headings. These are described as follows: 1) Gas turbine lubricants~civil aviation: contributions from major oil suppliers to the airline fleets of the world. Topics range from development of oils to performance and analtical testing. 2) Gas turbine lubricants~military aviation: an insight is provided into the development objectives for military specifcations and the strategy for future action is exposed; development of helicopter and transmission lubricant is included under this heading. 3) Aviation gas turbine fuels and lubricants~performance testing: papers are selected for inclusion which describe work initiated by the need to assess performance properties and link the assessment to diagnostic capability
