This collection of ten papers is developed to the topic of sensors. As electronic systems become more prevalent in today's vehicles, the controls and actuators increase in importance. Both the specific type of sensor used and the application for which it is used are described in several of the papers: resonant peizoelectric benders used to sense knock, pressure-sensing semiconductors, thin film electrothermal sensing of liquid levels and thick-film temperature sensing. Other papers are examinations of the field: sensors which control microprocessors, electronic sensor requirements for heavy duty diesels, nonintrusive magnetic engine timing sensors, self-weighing load sensors, and sensors used in quality assurance activities in production
