More stringent diesel emissions legislation is placing an increased burden on engine lubricant in the form of soot loading.
The very powerful and unique reasons behind continued development of diesel engines include greater power density, superior fuel consumption, and significantly reduced carbon dioxide (CO2) and carbon monoxide (CO) emissions compared to gasoline-fueled alternatives. No other power option can compete with the very specific load-carrying demands necessary to ensure continuing growth in the global economy.
The heavy-duty diesel engine emerging in the early part of the 21st century will be very different from the powerplant operating today. By far the greatest challenge to the dominance of the diesel is increasingly challenging emissions regulations.
