Wiper Standards Committee

The Wiper Standards Committee reports to the Vehicle Engineering Systems Group of the Motor Vehicle Council. The Committee is responsible for developing and maintaining SAE Standards, Recommended Practices, Information Reports, and Technical Reports related to passenger car windshield wiper (J903) and washer (J942) systems. The intent of any changes/updates is to better meet the needs of the industry and to help facilitate the development of better products for industry consumers. The Committee is interested in finding ways to simplify standards and helping consolidate, where practical, the standards of ISO, EEC, FMVSS, NHTSA and other related automotive industry standards. To achieve this last objective the written standards from each group will be reviewed for possible consolidation with J903 and J942. The Committee will contact the appropriate members of organizations for their input and guidance. It is not the intent of Committee to, in any way, restrain trade or exclude any products presently meeting a market need. The market includes both original equipment and aftermarket. It is also not the intent of the committee to establish standards that are biased in favor of any single or group of manufacturers; however, the goal of the is to establish balanced standards that meet the needs and requirements of all industry participants and consumers. Participants in the SAE Wiper Standards Committee include OEMs, suppliers, consulting firms, government, and other interested parties. After the Committee has completed its revisions to J903 and J942, a series of balloted approvals will be required before SAE adoption of the revised practices. During the approval process, others not specifically represented by the committee will have an opportunity to revisit the recommendations of the Committee.
