Scope
The following definitions and illustrations are intended to establish common nomenclature and terminology for universal joints and driveshafts used in various driveline applications. In addition, useful guidelines are included for the application of universal joints and driveshafts. For more specific details, see Universal Joint and Driveshaft Design Manual, AE-7.

Issuing Committee
The Driveline Standards Committee reports to the Powertrain Systems Group of the Motor Vehicle Council. The Committee is responsible for developing and maintaining SAE Standards, Recommended Practices, and Information Reports related to vehicle and equipment drivelines. The committee’s mission is to provide technical information to the designers, manufacturers, users and maintainers of drivelines in order to serve the public interest.
