Scope
Under U.S. GHG and CAFE regulations, manufacturers are required to perform confirmatory testing to validate indirect air conditioning credits (refer to 40 CFR 86.1868-12). The purpose of this Reccomended Practice is to provide manufacturers with updated criteria for the 2020 and later model years.
This Recommended Practice discribes the work done by the IMAC GHG CRP to develop test procedures, publish SAE Standards, and determine performance requirements to demonstrate the performance of A/C technologies from the pre-approved credit menu meeting regulatory requirements.
Also, enclosed in this Recommended Practice are instructions that can be used by vehicle manufacturers in establishing an engineering analysis in lieu of performing the AC17 test on a vehicle which does not incorporate the credit-generating technologies. These procedures for performing an engineering analysis should be sufficient to satisfy the requirements of the regulation to earn credits for indirect A/C technologies from the pre-approved credit menu.
Rationale
The IMAC GHG CRP was formed to establish procedures for performing an engineering analysis which can be used to comply with U.S. GHG and CAFE regulations which require “A”-to-“B” tesing of A/C efficiency credit technology beginning in 2020MY. This Recommended Practice documents the work done by the CRP in establishing procedures and performance thresholds for indirect A/C technologies from the pre-approved credit menu and documents the reccomended procedures to conduct the analysis.

Interior Climate Control Vehicle OEM Committee
The Interior Climate Control OEM Committee is responsible for developing and maintaining SAE Standards, Recommended Practices, and Information Reports that serve as guidelines for technicians who service mobile air conditioning systems and operate refrigerant recycling equipment as it applies to automobiles, light trucks and other vehicles with similar R12 systems. Participants in the SAE Interior Climate Control Standards Committee include OEMs, suppliers, consulting firms, government, and other interested parties.
