Issuing Committee
Tow Vehicle Trailer Rating Committee
The Tow Vehicle Trailer Rating Committee reports to the Vehicle Engineering Systems Group of the Motor Vehicle Council. The Committee is responsible for developing and maintaining SAE Standards, Recommended Practices, and Information Reports related to trailer weight ratings in order to create common language, enhance safety and promote uniform testing and performance. The Committee is currently drafting J2807, Performance Requirements for Determining Tow Vehicle Gross Combination Weight Ratings and Trailer Weight Ratings, which establishes minimum performance criteria at GCWR and calculation methodology to determine tow vehicle trailer rating for passenger cars, multipurpose passenger vehicles and light trucks up to 19500 lb GVWR (Class 5). Participants in the SAE Tow Vehicle Trailer Rating Committee include OEMs, suppliers, consulting firms, government, and other interested parties.
