Scope
This SAE Standard provides a comprehensive list of guidelines for the selection, identification, and control of metric- and inch-sized fasteners for use in shipboard applications for both shipbuilder installed joints and for use in shipboard components. This guidance includes the following:

Rationale
This document has not been revised since 1996; due to extensive changes, this document has been rewritten and retitled appropriately as a guidance document. Definitions have been rewritten for consistency with SAE J2270 and/or modified to be in accordance with Navy and other industry standards. References have been updated and new references added.
