Scope
The purpose of this recommended practice is to establish test procedures and minimum performance standards for kingpins and their supporting structure manufactured to SAE specifications. The dimensions shown in SAE J700 will permit the establishment of standard clearances in the installed condition which, in turn, will permit fifth wheel manufacturers to design their products to establish interchangeability with any kingpin made and installed to the SAE specification.

Truck and Bus Coupling and Interchangeability Committee
The Scope of the Truck and Bus Coupling and Interchangeability Committee is to establish minimum performance requirements and standard test procedures for fifth wheels. Any model of fifth wheel tested to this standard should properly couple and uncouple to a commercial SAE J700 (2 inch) kingpin. The performance requirements are to be based on actual fifth wheel loadings, sound engineering judgment and wherever possible, in harmony with existing standards and/or practices.

* Redlines comparisons are available for those standards
listed in the Revision History that contain a radio button. A
redline comparison of the current version against a revision is
accomplished by selecting the radio button next to the standard and
then selecting 'compare'. At this time, Redline versions only exist
for some AMS standards. SAE will continue to add redline versioning
with ongoing updates to SAE MOBILUS.
