Abstract
In 1985, IGL 20 was established by CEC to study black
sludge formation in modern gasoline engines. This investigation
group was later changed to a project group identified as PL-37. A
subgroup of PL-37 was then formed to support the activities of the
main group by 1)surveying the literature and 2)completing used oil
analysis on selected samples.
The objective of the literature survey was to establish the
level of current knowledge related to deposit formation in gasoline
engines. A total of 69 documents up to 1986, were thoroughly
reviewed by four members to extract information concerning: The
mechanism of deposit formation with particular emphasis on sludge.
The most useful methods for determining the composition of deposits
and used oils.
