Design and Evaluation of Automotive Static Perceptual Quality

Static perceptual quality is the term applied to the customer’s first impression of a car at the beginning of the buying process including how it looks, feels, and smells.  This “first feeling” largely determines whether the customer continues through  the purchase process.

At present, OEMs have no systematic method for static perceptual quality in the whole vehicle design and development process, especially for the static perceptual quality review in the early stage of design and development before data freezing. Usually, it can only be evaluated after the vehicle is produced and assembled.  At that point, it could be redesigned after the problem is found but that causes waste of human resources, tooling cost and timing. And often, due to the constraints of timing and cost, the design may have to remain as is, which does not meet the customer’s expectation. Therefore, OEMs need to establish a complete static perceptual quality targets and objective evaluation method applied to the whole process of vehicle design development, especially in the early stage of the vehicle development in order to greatly reduce the design changes.

This course describes a complete static perceptual quality design and technology path as well as an evaluation method for vehicle development especially in the early stage of evaluating and optimizing the design of modeling and CAD data.  In addition, an objective evaluation method of static perceptual quality, namely “Craftsmanship Engineering Index” for vehicle DTS, is presented, which evaluates the feasibility of manufacturing the vehicle in the early stage of modeling and/or CAD data.
