Scope
This SAE Aerospace Standard (AS) defines the materials, apparatus and procedure for sizing and counting of particulate contamination, 5 µm or greater, in hydraulic fluid samples by membrane filtration with microscopic counting.
The microscopic counting method is capable of counting particulate matter in samples withdrawn from fluid power systems as identified by the 12 classes of AS4059 and projected beyond these for the five standard ranges specified and can thus serve as the primary document to determine acceptability.
It is also capable of revealing but not measuring evidence of abnormal amount of water, other fluids, fine particulate and other materials, especially fibers and metals.
It is applicable to all military, civil, space vehicles and test equipment.
Rationale
There is a need to upgrade this document from a recommended practice to an aerospace standard to reflext its usage in the aerospace industry. This document has been changed to reflect this upgrade.

Issuing Committee
A-6C1 Fluids and Contamination Control Committee
A6C1 is responsible for the development of standards, processes, and practices related to Aerospace Fluids and Systems' cleanliness in aerospace engines, hydraulic systems and missiles, and the integration of these components for Commercial and Military air vehicles. The panel provides a forum for government engineers, prime contractors, and suppliers to exchange technical information, regulatory updates, recent technology developments, issues related to system development and in service operation and lessons learned.

* Redlines comparisons are available for those standards
listed in the Revision History that contain a radio button. A
redline comparison of the current version against a revision is
accomplished by selecting the radio button next to the standard and
then selecting 'compare'. At this time, Redline versions only exist
for some AMS standards. SAE will continue to add redline versioning
with ongoing updates to SAE MOBILUS.
