Optimization of the Combustion System for a Direct-Injection Gasoline Engine, Using a High-Speed, In-Cylinder Sampling Valve

The paper describes the development of the piston bowl shape for an automotive direct-injection gasoline engine using in-cylinder gas sampling to obtain crank angle resolved local air/fuel ratio measurements. Load range curves are presented from the optimized combustion system, which was capable of stable combustion at air/fuel ratios (AFR) in the range 50 to 60:1, enabling unthrottled operation down to zero load.
