The Business Perspective-Engineering Affordable Solutions to the Hsdi Diesel Euro Iv Challenge
Published January 01, 1998 by Institution of Mechanical Engineers in United Kingdom
Reductions in European emission standards have accelerated quickly since the late 1980s. This trend is set to continue with the introduction of Euro III (2000) and then Euro IV (2005). Although Euro IV levels are not finalized, indicative limit values present a significant technical challenge, particularly for HSDI diesel engines.
The business environment in Europe is arguably the most competitive automotive market in the world. This is coupled with increasing levels of environmental awareness, political and social pressure to reduce exhaust emissions, including CO2.
This paper discusses the issue from the business perspective, considering the business environment, diesel market, future technologies and customer expectations. The focus, however, is primarily on the critical aspect of affordability. The challenge to the automotive industry is to develop innovative and affordable solutions to meet future emission standards.
