Abstract
This paper describes the modification of a rear wheel drive manual transmission for the purpose of shifting using electromechanical actuators under microprocessor control. This Shift By Wire (SBW) technology has applications in automated manual transmission systems and shift assist systems. The system is optimized for shift comfort and shift speed. A test vehicle was outfitted with the system and evaluated. The development concerns for this type of program are discussed and prototype results of the undertaken program are presented.
