Jaguars Approach to Weight Reduction on "Xk8
Published July 02, 1997 by Associazione Tecnica Dell'Automobile in Italy
XK8 is an all new sports car to take Jaguar into the next century. During the product planning phase while the "missions statement' was being defined the performance and hence weight targets were established.
With most new vehicle programs a balance needs to be established between introducing new technologies and processes but only those that deliver high customer satisfaction and robust quality given existing plant and facilities.
The conceptual planning stage of the XK8 underwent an intense evaluation of technologies, features, refined materials, dimensional control techniques and advanced manufacturing processes which focused on weight reduction.
The program fully utilized CAE which allowed designs to be validated with high confidence within compressed timescales and without the benefit of extensive prototype testing before committing to production tooling.
This resulted in the final production vehicle meeting its intended performance specification and its weight target along with being within program cost and on time.
