Rapid Identification of Plastic Parts for Automobiles By Pyrolysis Infrared Spectroscopy

Abstract
A new system for rapid identification of plastic parts for automobiles has been developed, by using a pyrolysis infrared spectroscopy, for the purpose of classification for recycling. A surface of a plastic part is pyrolyzed momently by the pyrolysis probe that has been developed for this purpose, and by IR spectrum of the gaseous pyrolyzate the type of the plastic is identified in a few seconds. This system has the following features: 1) Samples need not be handled. 2) Colored samples including black are very easy to be measured. 3) Effect of surface contamination is negligible.
