Lubricating Oil Consumption of Diesel Engines-Part 1: An Effect of Piston Behavior in Lubricating Oil Consumption

With our efforts focused on reduction in lubricating oil consumption as one major factor for reducing particulate matter, the effects of piston skart shapes have been analyzed which as a result, has revealed correlation between lubricating oil consumption and the slap speed of the piston ring groove in the radial direction. This is probably because shearing force acts on the oil existing between the piston ring and the ring groove. Engine design with the slap speed in the radial direction considered will become essential to the reduction of oil consumption.
