Three-Dimensional Simulation of the Flow Through a Twin-Intake Port Engine

The three-dimensional flow structure in the intake ports and cylinder of a Ford "Zetec" dual-intake valve engine operating under steady flow conditions has been modeled using computational fluid dynamics. A detailed 3D numerical grid incorporating all the features of the engine inlet ports, valves and cylinder head was produced using CAD surface data. Grid sensitivity tests showed that the CFD predictions were grid-independent. Laser-sheet flow visualization and laser-doppler anemometry were also employed to investigate the flows and to assess the predictions. The results show that the mean velocity characteristics have been well-predicted in all planes.
