Evaluation of Door Closing Sound Using Semantic Differential Method

Nowadays, an engineering emphasis has focused on comfort and amenity features added to the traditional product design. Sound quality is one of the criteria that customers put the value in it. Especially, for those who consider purchasing a new automobile, the door closing sound quality is one of major attribute values with the engine noise, as far as sound is concerned. In the study, a method to evaluate the door closing sound has been developed. Based on the factor analysis, various adjective pairs which describe meaning of the door sound have been differentiated. This approach, called SD (semantic differential) method, was originally developed in linguistics research in order to compare diverse mother tongue. This paper introduces at first how the door sound is generated and transmitted. After that a factor analysis which is a tool of SD method is implemented to door closing sound for medium size automobiles. Finally, various adjectives which attribute the door sound quality are factorized into three groups.
