Advanced Development Tools for High Performance Engines

To comply with future market demands advanced engine technologies have to be applied in mass production more frequently while development periods have to be reduced. For both, taking full advantage of such new engine technologies and accelerating the development process, new development tools are required.
By consequent improvement and combination of various measurement principles, measuring tools were developed to enable precise investigations of influences of charge motion, mixture formation, engine geometry, combustion and knock not only as superimposed integral results but also individually and with high spatial and time based resolution. The fact, that sophisticated and sensible research instruments were developed towards robust development tools forms the basis for their successful application in engine engineering.
The paper describes not only such tools for optimization of charge motion, mixture formation and knock but also their successful practical application.
