A new concept 3-way catalyst that stores NOx in lean operating conditions and reduces the stored NOx in rich operating conditions was developed for lean burn engines. Alkaline materials are added to a conventional 3-way catalyst as NOx storage components. Stored NOx is able to be reduced by means of very short rich operations, without HC and CO emission deterioration. Fuel consumption increase by this rich operation is within 1%. High NOx conversion efficiency is consequently obtained in not only urban cycles but also cruising conditions.
