Investigation of Variable Valve Area Strategies for a Turbocharged 4-Valve SI Engine

Two factors - high range of variation of pressure difference between manifolds and high range of air flow, make design of cam profiles for turbocharged 4-valve SI-engine a very specific task. Therefore, although VVA systems have proven to be very effective in expanding naturally aspirated engine flow and speed range, their possible beneficial effect in case of TCSI- engine is not certain. This paper presents results of parametric investigation of the performance of TCSI-engine with three combinations of valve area profiles. Engine performance was simulated using quasi-dimensional turbocharged SI engine computer simulation. Study is performed on a 1.4 l engine with a pent-roof combustion chamber. The goal was to estimate is the use of VVA justified, and what strategy would be the best and finally propose an optimal solution.
