Authors Abstract
Content
This paper is based on the SAE paper written by R. B. Kazmier in December of 1962. It can be found in Section #6 of SAE Paper SP-240. The mathematical formulas in the computer programs are based on the mathematical formulas as derived by Mr. Kazmier. In some instances, the formulas were changed to allow processing by BASIC and FORTRAN compilers. The output format has been changed slightly from the original paper and multiple wheel base values are also printed.
Front axle design parameters have become even more important since the date of the original paper. Tire tread life and alignment issues have become paramount in the 90's. The importance of properly aligned vehicles and front axle specification such and toe-in, camber and wheel base consideration have never been greater. Very extensive studies have been performed by major front axle component manufacturers and has yielded changes in philosophies and specifications henceforth set in ‘concrete’. This paper is presented to allow a quick and simple method in determining Ackermann error calculations and front axle geometry calculations.
