Hino Motors, Ltd. has developed a new medium duty truck with a diesel- electric hybrid engine system consisting of a TI diesel engine, a very thin three phase AC induction motor fitted in the flywheel housing of the diesel engine, a very light weight and small size inverter and batteries, etc. This system converts the braking energy into electric energy to be stored in a battery and adds the assisting torque to the diesel engine by the AC induction motor. Therefore the exhaust smoke and NOx produced at start-up and acceleration of this vehicle are greatly decreased in comparison with the conventional diesel engine.
