Development of a Vortex Amplifier Port Throttling Manifold System for a 4- Cylinder Spark Ignition Engine

An experimental and analytical investigation of the use of a Vortex Amplifier (VA) as a port throttle for a multi-cylinder spark ignition engine has been conducted. This concept has been proposed to improve the fuel efficiency by reducing pumping losses.
Results of previous tests of a VA on a single cylinder engine have been used to design a system for a 4-cylinder engine.
A computer model was developed to simulate the induction stroke of the test engine, when a VA is coupled to its intake port. Several different VA sizes and control port areas were simulated. The effect of reducing the VA control jet area on the VA performance has also been examined analytically and experimentally.
The results of this investigation show that the VA has the potential of reducing the pumping loss of a spark ignition engine.
