Evaluation of a High Frequency Reciprocating Wear Test for Measuring Diesel Fuel Lubricity

Abstract
This paper presents the evaluation of a candidate reciprocating test procedure for the measurement of the lubricity of diesel fuels under scuffing conditions in a commercially available high frequency test rig. Using comparable test conditions, the wear mechanism was found to be corrosive rather than scuffing, however, discrimination was high although correlation with pump performance was only moderate having an average correlation coefficient of 90%. The effect of increasing the load was to change the wear mechanism to adhesive and although correlation with pump performance improved, discrimination deteriorated.
