Abstract
In the summer of 1987, a very unusual thing occurred in the test and measurement industry. Five major manufacturers agreed to develop an open system standard for modular instrumentation that would allow users to configure systems based on mainframes and modules from different manufacturers. Based on the VMEbus backplane, this new standard was named VXlbus, for VMEbus extensions for instrumentation. Since that time, over fifty manufacturers have announced VXlbus products, while over two hundred have been granted manufacturer ID codes, necessary to develop products. This paper gives an overview of the status of VXlbus, an update of the VXlbus consortium activities, and trends within the VXlbus marketplace.
