Abstract
Simultaneous engineering is critical to improving time to
market. It involves organization re-design by facilitating cross
functional teams or natural groups to improve the effectiveness of
core business processes. Effective project management is the
backbone for managing the quantities and complexity of concurrent
activities in order that simultaneous engineering can be
implemented and institutionalized successfully. Around this
backbone we can build a set of management and design quality
support methodologies and tools to move towards the vision of an
integrated technical management solution to the product
introduction process. Cross functional skills from marketing to
manufacturing systems engineering are involved simultaneously.
However, whilst the benefits of this methodology are clear,
implementation is often difficult due to the need to change
traditional organizational perceptions and culture as well as
structures and systems.
This paper will present the combined solution which capitalizes
on the synergy existing between Lucas Management Systems'
artemis project management system and the process re- design
expertise and product design methodology of Lucas Engineering
Systems Limited for implementing change in organizations and
cementing the improvements made.
Competitive advantage can be achieved if there is effective
management of time, in terms of target project schedules and
concurrent activities, effective management of resources, in terms
of project costs, and facilities and effective management of the
quality of process and product design using team based design
support tools. This minimizes project risk and result in reduced
time to market and a product which may be profitably reproduced to
target cost and quality
