Combustion Characteristics of An Otto-Atkinson Engine Using Late Inlet Valve Closing and Multi-Point Electronic Fuel Injection

The otto-atkinson engine may be regarded as a spark ignition engine in which the load is controlled by variable late intake valve closing (LIVC) in place of throttling. The effect of fuelling by multi-point injection in such an engine on mixture preparation, ignition delay, burn rate and combustion stability are reported. The design of the LIVC engine is described and combustion data is presented and discussed. Satisfactory operation has been achieved over a wide load range and improvement in fuel consumption obtained. Parameters affecting the operation and performance are highlighted.
