Valve Train Dynamics and Their Contribution to Engine Performance

AVL started a research program into computational valve train analysis. The target of this work was to develop an advanced prediction technique for valve trains, applicable for all common valve train mechanisms including various types of nonlinear and hydraulic elements and enabling the analysis of dynamic effects in the complete timing system. Thus a first step of modelling a timing drive including gear train and cycle calculation was performed. The research work was carried out by means of calculation and measurement; main steps and results are described in this paper.
