The solution to complex vibration problems in a vehicle can be simplified using Real Time Animation (RTA) analysis, but first it must be determined if using RTA, versus other multichannel experimental techniques, will accomplish the targeted test goals. Understanding the nature of a specific problem will also help define if RTA testing should be used for that application. An idle shake test case is discussed to show how an actual vibration problem was resolved using RTA. With RTA, engine excitation, as well as structural response of a test vehicle, was quantified and visualized through one laboratory test. Viewing the deflection shapes in real time not only allowed the significant contributors to a vibration problem to be quickly identified, but also cultivated the implementation of effective solutions. However, it must be realized that the RTA test results may demonstrate the need for other types of testing for a complete characterization of a problem.
