The truck diesel engine is now faced with very stringent emissions standards both in the Western World and Japan. At the same time there are increasing pressures to improve the levels of performance, economy, durability, reliability, noise and refinement whilst maintaining acceptable levels of engine cost. In this paper Ricardo presents and discusses the key technologies that will be used to address these challenges and reviews the long term potential of the truck diesel engine.
