Abstract
In today's competitive market place there is an increasing
trend toward shorter product lead-times. Hence, there is a need to
become more efficient, to incur less rework and to reduce waste in
both material and resources. This paper discusses a novel technique
which addresses these issues as early as the conceptual stage of
product design.
The methodology described provides the engineer with an
assessment of the manufacturability of a component and an
indication as to its likely cost to produce. The relationship of
the technique with existing design support tools is discussed,
together with an example of how the technique can be used to
determine the most appropriate manufacturing process for a given
design. Computer-aided implementations of the methodology (CAD and
Expert System based) are also discussed
