Modelling of Two Phase Mixture Flow and Vaporization in Spark Ignition Engine Intake Systems

A two-dimensional two phase model of the flows of air and fuel in an engine intake duct has been created based on the computational fluid dynamics program, PHOENICS. Specific simulation of the behavior of fuel drops and films has been achieved by the addition of newly constructed models. The purpose of the simulation is to provide designers with a means of predicting the effects of changes in intake specifications on mixture formation and engine performance over the load range and during a load transient.
To date, steady state two phase flow calculations have been performed and seen to be phenomenologically correct. The next stage of the program is to validate the results against test data.
