Abstract
The advanced computational fluid dynamics methods applied to the aerodynamic development of large steam turbine cylinders, exhaust casings and valves are described. Optimization of blades is carried out by means of sophisticated through-flow calculations, accurate profile loss prediction over a wide Mach number range and full three-dimensional Euler and Navier-Stokes flow analysis. The complex viscous flows in exhaust casings and valves are being reliably calculated enabling improved performance to be achieved. The importance attached to experimental validation of the codes is reflected throughout the paper by the extensive comparisons of test and calculation results.
