Abstract
A laboratory scale sludge simulator was used to investigate the effect of fuel composition on sludge formation. The simulator consists of a synthetic blow-by gas generator, a reaction vessel and a waste gas disposal device. The amount of sludge formed was found to change with the chemical structure of hydrocarbons. The results suggest that the hydrocarbons in the fuels are sensitive to sludge formation and the simulator is applicable to the evaluation of fuel for the sludge formation.
