Unsteady Flow Performance of Turbocharger Radial Turbines

The unsteady flow performance of turbocharger radial turbines are affected by the characteristics of the pulsating flow. The paper presents the results of an extensive investigation developed at the University of Genoa. A new arrangement of the turbocharger test rig and an original injection device to measure turbine characteristics almost to zero mass flow conditions are described.
Steady and pulsating flow performance of a wastegated turbocharger turbine was measured. The influence of the main parameters of the pulsating flow on average turbine mass flow and torque were analyzed. Additionally, a wide range of quasi-steady flow methods were developed, and difference procedures for calculating turbine overall performance were proposed and tested.
