Authors Abstract
Content
A polyethylene terephthalate (PET) compound has been commercialized for injection-molded, exterior automotive body panels which are capable of being on processed in existing assembly plants along with steel panels. Fenders made of this thermoplastic material have survived exposure to electrolytic treatment (ELPO) cure temperatures of 200 C in a commercial assembly plant with no additional steel reinforcement or part readjustment and achieved a final part appearance comparable to steel.
This paper discusses the material, part design, molding, painting, on comparative properties, and economics of this new exterior automotive engineering resin.
