Abstract
The Canadian Project MILE is testing a number of methanol-powered heavy vehicles under actual fleet operating conditions. Included in the trials are two Kenworth highway tractor units powered by converted Caterpillar 3406 DITA engines. These trucks have been operated by a commercial hauler since October 1987, pulling double van trailer sets through the Rocky Mountains on a 1700 km round trip. This paper examines the performance, fuel economy, reliability and operator acceptance experienced, and outlines some of the modifications made to the trucks and engines.
