Content
In order to keep pace with today's advanced technology, older missile systems, such as the AIM–7 Sparrow, are continually being updated to increase the life of missiles in service, increase performance, decrease weight, and lower cost. With this in mind, a redesign and analysis of the existing AIM–7M Sparrow control surface was made, replacing cast titanium with a combination of titanium and graphite/phenolic prepreg. This paper highlights the composite design, structural analysis, and material and process work involved to successfully produce a prototype Sparrow Missile Wing, The overall program was performed in conjunction with the Raytheon Company's Missile Systems Division.
