Abstract
After a short description of the Endoscopic High speed Combustion Photography Technique used, the results obtained through observation of the following phenomena in a 0.5 litre HSDI Diesel engine are presented:
-
the wall jet development and the role of swirl
-
the effect of wall temperature (cold and warm engine) on combustion development
-
the effect of pilot injection on mixture formation and combustion
-
To document these phenomena, typical high speed films are presented supplemented by cylinder pressure, injector needle lift, rate of heat release, and light radiation (flame luminosity) intensity data recorded simultaneously by means of a digital acquisition system.
