Abstract
This paper provides a brief history of the development of the automotive gearbox. With particular reference to heavy vehicles it deals with the present state of the art applied to single and twin layshaft gearboxes and gives emphasis to further advancements now possible by the addition of a unique torque sharing concept which improves capacity and reduces the operating and idling noise level of heavy duty truck gearboxes, with savings in weight and installation space. It further extends this concept to its application on range change auxilliary gearboxes.
