Statistical Process Control is a Management Style

The primary consideration for a company about to embark on a Statistical Process Control (SPC) program should be how to change the company culture and what the new expectations from direct labor will be. In addition, Quality Control has a new and different role. They must become problem solvers and educators as well as metrologists. Their role as auditor and policeman is gone.

Statistical Process Control (SPC) is a measure of the process or machine performance, not a measure of product quality. Consequently, where, how and who should use it is different than traditional Quality Control methods. SPC should be part of manufacturing management and the operator's tools if the full benefits and cost reductions are to be achieved.
