Abstract
The inability of a licensed handicapped driver to lift his/her manual wheelchair into the storage position behind the driver's seat of a passenger car without additional physical assistance can seriously curtail independent personal mobility, and drastically limit or reduce employment opportunity in the real world. This paper describes utilization by mobility-impaired, licensed drivers of an innovative, commercially-manufactured lifting device for storage of manual wheelchairs on passenger cars as a viable, practical, and economical alternative to modified passenger vans.
