- One of the main dilemmas, designers of light duty high speed diesel engines have been faced with when making choice of concept, is whether to decide on smaller cyl volume and increased number of cylinders or vice versa. Our experience and realised performances with I MR S54V engine, and also some other recent experiences, show that the former choice offers more chances for optimum commercial vehicles drive. In the course of engine development particular attention has been paid to make optimisation in accordance with expected engine operating conditions in service. Operating conditions and velocity of achievement of engine optimum operating state upon starting are two out of a number of service requirements that have been specially dealt with in this paper.Full optimisation of volumetric and mechanical efficiencies, two of the basic fields with engines of this class, allowed the achievement of very good engine performances.
