Abstract
The advantages of exploring advanced, low density aluminum alloys as alternatives to other material systems for aircraft applications are examined. Alcoa's programs for development of low density materials are discussed and specific property goals for the first generation alloys are presented. These goals are compared to R&D achievements for several product forms including some that have been commercially fabricated. Overall program time tables are presented with projections toward future developments.
