- Current and future programs using two-way radio for highway safety communications are reviewed. The dramatic growth of CB from 2½ million to 20 million radios in use from 1970 to 1977 is attributed in large measure to motorists' desire for communications. Potential savings in lives, property and conservation of fuel through reduced reporting time are achieved through CB radio emergency monitoring programs. Review of Ohio REACT, program, MEP REACT in Detroit, Missouri Highway Patrol experience and the NEAR (National Emergency Aid Radio) program by NHTSA are included.
