Abstract
This paper deals with the process and present status of the development of gas turbine YTP12 for heavy duty vehicles at Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. Within the mechanism of the engine, there remains much room for improvement in the heat exchanger, while the problems of vibration and heat have been solved in varying degrees. The exhaust emission of the YTP12 complies with the exhaust emission standards for heavy duty vehicles, and further purification is expected as a result of an improved combustion process achieved through improvements in the fuel injector and the combustion chamber. The YTP12 has been mounted on inter-urban buses to undergo road tests. At the present time, its fuel consumption is not yet satisfactory, but it is expected that mileage for buses equipped with this gas turbine will be improved through improvements in the performance of aerodynamic components and in the effectiveness of the heat exchanger, and in fuel economy for partial loads improved by injecting water. Noise made outside the bus is extremely low, much lower than the legal standard.
