Abstract
Peugeot-Renault, with the Orthopedic Research Institute of the
Raymond Poincaré Hospital of Garches, and in cooperation with the
National Traffic Safety Agency, conducted a scientific study of all
of the occupant injury accidents encountered by motorists on the 60
km of expressway for which this hospital in suburban Paris provides
medical support.
Each accident is photographed by a police crew which also
collects preliminary basic information. The vehicles are
subsequently photographed, analyzed, and measured for certain
aspects (e.g. by application of an index of deformation) by
specialists. A medical dossier is developed for each occupant
injured or killed.
The primary objective of this research was to validate
improvements made to the Peugeot-Renault belt and to guide further
improvements in its performance. Actually, examination of the
results was done on a broader basis including quantification of the
relationships which characterize the parameters of the impact and
those of occupant injuries. This leads to data on human tolerance
and to identifying basic elements of the passenger compartment as
to their agressivity or their protective value.
